Product Description
--------------------
WebWhacker is an advanced off-line browsing tool that allows you to re-create sections of the World Wide Web directly on your hard drive or local network. You can save particular pages--complete with text, links, graphics, Java applets, sound clips, even video clips if you have sufficient hard drive space. Once the Web pages are saved to your hard drive (that is, once you have "whacked" them), you can refer back to the information and clips at any time, without an online connection and additional connection charges.
--------------------
New Features
--------------------
WebWhacker 2.0 includes categorization and scheduling. You can now look at whacked pages a in hierarchical tree structure.
You can ensure your database remains up to date by scheduling WebWhacker to perform automatic, unattended updates.
WebWhacker 2.0 keeps all of your whacked Web pages in a single database that you can sort into categories and subcategories to suit your needs. You can also find the information you want by conducting complex Boolean searches through the titles and text of the pages in your database. Although the database is a proprietary format, you can export a site's HTML and related files for use in other programs.
---------------------------------
System Requirements for Macintosh
---------------------------------
* 68030 or higher class machine
* System 7.1 or greater. WebWhacker 2.0 uses Macintosh Drag & Drop, included in
System 7.5. Extensions for Drag & Drop must be added to System 7.1.
* An active Internet connection with a Winsock-compliant network product (Open Transport or MacTCP).
* 8 MB RAM. Additional memory makes WebWhacker run faster.
* 10 MB free hard drive space (2 MB for the program; 8 MB for whacked site). You will need additional space if you use a large WebWhacker database file.
* TCP/IP connection with SLIP, PPP or direct connectivity.
* A Web browser, such as:
* Internet Explorer version 2.0 or higher
* NetScape Navigator version 1.1b3 or later
* Enhanced Mosaic version 2.0 or later
* or other Spyglass SDI-compliant browser
* A 14.4 modem (or higher speed link) is recommended.
* Internet Config 1.3 or higher (If user uses Internet Config feature within WebWhacker 2.0)
The amount of time required to transfer data to the server will vary depending on the speed of your connection and the amount of data being transferred.
-------------------------------
Upgrading from Version 1.0
-------------------------------
If you are upgrading from WebWhacker 1.0 and wish to retain the groups you acquired, DO NOT DELETE YOUR WEBWHACKER 1.0 DIRECTORY OR FILES.
After you finish installing WebWhacker 2.0, use the Import function to import your WebWhacker 1.0 files into WebWhacker 2.0. This function does not import the content of the previously whacked pages; it only brings the site URLs into the tree structure. In order to access graphics and data from the site, you must then rewhack the URLs.
--------------------
Limitations
--------------------
* Unsupported Protocols: WebWhacker does not currently support gopher, nntp, news, or mail protocols. They are skipped when they are encountered in the HTML for a site.
* FTP Limitations: WebWhacker does not currently support FTP Proxy. However, it will load files from FTP sites if the full path name (ending with a file name) is given.
* Forms: WebWhacker 2.0 does not support HTML forms (For example, search forms).
* CGI-Generated Scripts and Images: WebWhacker 2.0 does not support CGI-generated scripts and images (Server-Side). However, it does support Client-Side image maps.
--------------------
Quick Start
--------------------
THE ABSOLUTE MINIMUM
Once you have installed WebWhacker, open the program by going to the WebWhacker folder, and clicking on the WebWhacker icon. When the program loads, WebWhacker displays a list of the URLs for World Wide Web pages that have been added to the database and, perhaps, whacked (downloaded to your hard drive). You can add a URL by selecting "Add" from the URL menu and completing the dialog box. Once a URL is added to the list you can start downloading by clicking the "Whack" button on the Toolbar.
To view whacked or unwhacked pages through WebWhacker, double-click the URL names in the file list. URLs preceeded by an icon that looks like a globe on a sheet of paper have been whacked to your hard drive and do not require an active Internet connection for viewing. URLs preceeded by a globe icon are remote on the Internet and do require an active connection.
---------------------
Scheduling
---------------------
You can establish a schedule for WebWhacker to whack or renew the sites in your list. The update frequency for each site is set as part of the Properties for that specific URL. The scheduling of updates is set as part of the program-wide preferences. The preferences also let you determine whether you want WebWhacker to either whack marked sites, renew scheduled sites, or both.
LIMITATIONS: WebWhacker must be running in order for a scheduled whack or renew to start. If WebWhacker is in the middle of a whack when a scheduled whack or renew is supposed to start, the scheduled whack or renew does not stop the whack in progress. In either case, the scheduled whack or renew is skipped until the next scheduled time.
When you select Renew from the File menu or Toolbar, or when the scheduled update time arrives, all scheduled URLs are checked to determine if it is time for them to be updated and, if so specified, all marked URLs are whacked.
To set the update frequency for a URL, select the URL. Select Properties from the URL menu, then select Update Frequency dialog. Set the interval you want WebWhacker to use to update the site: Never, Daily, Weekly, or Monthly. You can also establish this frequency for each site when you selectAdd from the URL pull-down menu.
To specify how often you want WebWhacker to check each URL and determine if it needs to be updated (based on that URL's Update Frequency property), go to the Tools menu and select Preferences, then select the Scheduling dialog and choose the appropriate frequency period.
For example, if you set the update frequency to Daily, and the Preferences Frequency to Weekdays at 12:00, the URL is updated each weekday at 12:00. It is not updated on Saturdays and Sundays.
If you set the URL Update Frequency to Weekly, and the Preferences Frequency to Weekdays at 12:00, WebWhacker checks that URL every weekday to determine if it is time to update, but only updates it one week after the last update.
--------------------
Searching
--------------------
The WebWhacker Search function (found on the Tools menu) supports Boolean expressions (AND, OR, NOT). For example, if you want to search for all HTML documents that contain the words "foreFront" and "great" use "forefront AND great". Text matches are not case sensitive.
AND searches for documents containing both words, for example
"forefront AND great".
OR searches for documents containing either word, for example
"forefront OR great".
NOT searches for documents containing any word except the
specified word, for example "NOT great".
Syntax:
* Logical and uses "AND" or "&"
* Logical or uses "OR" or "|"
* Logical not uses "NOT" or "!"
The order of precedence is highest to lowest: NOT, AND, OR. You can change the precedence by grouping the expressions with parentheses.
You can access the search function by selecting Search from the Tools menu or the Toolbar.
*Warning*
When searching in a large database, WebWhacker might take a long time to finish and it might seem as if WebWhacker is frozen.
--------------------
Known Problems
--------------------
* Memory Requirements
When whacking large sites, it is recommended that user increase their Memory Application Partition.
* Modem Connection
Currently, WebWhacker does not support Automatic modem Dial-Out.
* Conflict between Scheduled and In-Progress Whacks
If WebWhacker is in the middle of a whack when a scheduled whack or renew is set to begin, the scheduled whack or renew will not occur. The current whack continues, and the scheduled whack or renew is cancelled until the next time it is cycled to begin.
* Import
User cannot import an HTML bookmark file from their browser.
* Browsing
While WebWhacker is either Extracting or Linking a file, the loading of images and/or files
into the browser may be slow.
* Importing WebWhacker 1.0 files
When importing WebWhacker files ( *.wwd), it appears as though the files are not being added to the database. User must exit WebWhacker 2.0 and reopen the application in order to view the URLs that were added to the database. The URLs must then be marked for whacking.
* Viewing Headlines
Headlines will not appear until the user whacks their first URL per whack session.
